Product information

Description

Our popular carving knife or sloyd knife is the only one of its kind. Specifically developed to be the best knife that money can buy. Designed by a professional carver, using the best knife steel on the market and forged with a custom heat treatment for optimal performance as a carving knife. The edge stays sharp much longer than ordinary knife steel, it will never rust and it doesn't chip easily like many other knifes made from "supersteel". It has a hardness of ~60hrc but is still easy to sharpen. The back of the blade is rounded and polished for more comfortable push cuts, and it allows you to burnish the wood smooth after carving. All knifes are handmade and signed, and all knifes come with a flat over hollow -grind for easy maintenance.

Care instructions

Sharpening this knife is really no different than any other knife. However, we recommend that you use diamonds or cbn sharpening abrasives to maximize edge retention. We also recommend that you strop with 8000 grit (3 micron) diamond paste instead of ordinary stropping compound. You can do this about five times before resharpening the knife with 1000 grit (~20 micron). The hollowgrind will last a very long time but can be reset with any regular grindstone like a tormek etc. With this knife, you wont need any sharpening equipment for several full days of carving, just bring the knife and some wood and carve on!

Want to keep your edge razor sharp? Mattis runs a paid Knife Sharpening Masterclass with clear video lessons and six live Q&A sessions — you're welcome to join.

About the materials

About Magnacut

CPM Magnacut is a newly developed powder metallurgical steel by Dr. Larrin Thomas. This steel is groundbreaking for stainless steel in that it doesn't form any large chromium carbides that make it brittle. Instead it has only vanadium carbides that are much smaller and harder, giving it unmatched toughness and edge retention while still being easy to sharpen. Pair that with a custom cryo heat treatment, a superfine hollow grind and an exceptional design makes this probably one of the best carving knifes ever created.

Why are these knives so expensive?

The grind is a big part of the answer. A blade with a flat-over-hollow grind takes much longer to create than most other knife grinds — grinding and finishing it properly is slow, careful work, and that time is part of what you pay for. The grind also makes the edge easy to re-sharpen yourself when the knife gets dull, and with Magnacut the edge holds up for a very long time before that is needed.

Does it affect my carving? No, it doesn't affect carving at all. The knife feels and behaves exactly like any other carving knife in the wood — the shape only comes into play when you sharpen the blade, where it makes the edge easy to refresh yourself.

It starts with the steel. CPM Magnacut is a very specialized steel — it costs considerably more than conventional knife steels, and it needs its own carefully developed heat treatment to reach its full properties. Done right, it gives you hardness, edge retention and corrosion resistance in the same blade, and there is no cheap way to get there.

Every knife is handmade by Mattis in Stallarholmen, one at a time and on a small scale. Nothing here is mass-produced.
