Magnacut vs 26C3 vs carbon steel for carving tools

Written by Mattias Höög · Last updated

Short answer

CPM Magnacut is a super premium, high-tech tool steel specifically developed to be the best stainless knife steel, combining high toughness, good edge retention and excellent corrosion resistance. 26C3 is a fine-grained high-carbon steel, often called "Spicy White", that takes an extremely keen, easy-to-sharpen edge but does not stay sharp as long and can rust. Simple carbon steels are forgiving and easy to sharpen but need oiling.

CPM Magnacut

CPM Magnacut is a super premium, high-tech tool steel specifically developed to be the best stainless knife steel. It was designed by metallurgist Larrin Thomas and is made by Crucible using powder metallurgy. It is stainless, very tough for its hardness, and holds an edge longer than typical carbon steels, so it needs less care in wet green wood.

26C3

26C3 is a high-carbon steel with around 1.25% carbon and a very fine grain. It is often called "Spicy White" because it resembles Hitachi White #1. It is prized for how easily it reaches a razor edge on stones. The chromium in 26C3 stabilizes carbides and refines the matrix, giving it superior edge-holding and toughness even when pushed to extreme hardness levels above 64 HRC.

Even so, 26C3 does not stay sharp as long as Magnacut. It is not stainless, so it will develop a patina and can rust if left wet.

Classic carbon steels

Steels such as 1095 and similar simple carbon steels have been used for slöjd knives for generations. They are easy to sharpen in the field and forgiving, but they wear faster than modern steels and must be kept dry and oiled.

Which should you choose?

  • Low maintenance and long edge life: Magnacut.
  • The keenest edge and easy sharpening, with some care: 26C3.
  • Traditional feel and low cost: simple carbon steel.

Frequently asked questions

Is Magnacut good for carving knives?
Yes. It is a super premium stainless steel that is tough, holds an edge well and resists rust, which suits thin carving edges and wet green wood.
Does 26C3 rust?
Yes. 26C3 is a carbon steel and should be wiped dry and lightly oiled after use.
Why is 26C3 called "Spicy White"?
Because it resembles Hitachi White #1: a very pure, fine-grained carbon steel that takes an extremely keen edge.
