Oiling and maintaining wooden knife handles

Written by Mattias Höög · Last updated

Short answer

Wooden knife handles should be oiled a few times a year with a drying oil such as linseed oil, or when the wood looks dry or pale. Apply a thin coat, let it soak in, wipe off the excess and let it cure. Keep handles away from prolonged soaking and direct heat.

How to oil a handle

  • Clean the handle and let it dry fully.
  • Apply a thin coat of linseed oil or a similar drying oil.
  • Let it soak in for 15–30 minutes, then wipe off all excess.
  • Let it cure for a day or more before heavy use.

Safety note

Rags soaked in linseed oil can self-heat and catch fire. Lay them flat to dry outdoors or soak them in water before disposal.

Stabilised and oiled woods

Stabilised or naturally oily woods need less maintenance, but an occasional wipe of oil or wax keeps them looking their best.
